In the Province of Cuenca, there is a large variety of habitats and ecosystems.
In the drier areas of La Mancha and La
Alcarria the environment is characteristically Mediteranean . In the
other parts of the province, there are large,
green, fertile forests that are more like the humid areas in the Pyrenees.
|
In the Beteta Canyon, we can
find relictic species such as the beech Fagus
sylvatica, large leaved lime Tilia platiphylos and common holly Ilex aquifolium |
| Hoz de Beteta (Sierra
de Cuenca)

The most impressive aspects of the mountain range of Cuenca are its extensive conifer,
Corsican pine and red pine
forests, its spectacular ravines, cliffs and limestone formations. From an ecological point of view
the oak and juniper forests in the area are also very important.

In the low areas of
the Province of Cuenca as in the majority of Castilla-La Mancha, most of the countryside is flat and open.
The steppe ecosystems are dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and cereals and
the rearing of sheep, goats etc. In this type of environment species such as the Great Bustard, the Little Bustard and the Lesser Kestrel are common.

The
wetlands and lakes of the Mancha are full of life and colour. Some,
such as the ones shown in the photos below, hold great importance for the
wildlife, especially for the birdlife.
